RESUMO: Long-term and high-quality gridded data sets of observed rainfall data are important to several types of hydrological and climate research, such as the validation of climate and estimation models, the detection of human influences on climate change, and the evaluation of hydrological cycles. In Brazil, the largest rainfall data set available on the HidroWeb Portal hosts daily values from more than 11,000 measurement points, from 1855 to the present. Although its national relevance, the HidroWeb data have not gone through any kind of quality control analysis, then data quality, data homogeneity and data completeness are still unknown. Previous works used HidroWeb raw data applying a simple quality verification was applied to the rainfall removing physically impossible values, such as values lower than 0 mm and higher than a threshold in millimeters. A quality control procedure applied to this data set could be useful to identify a broader range of missing values and uncertainties to ensure data quality, consistency, and reliability before the construction of the rainfall gridded data. This work aims to: (i) analyze historical rainfall data, (i) develop an absolute quality control index, (ii) develop a relative quality control index, and (iii) develop a rainfall gridded data set from good-quality station data. It was collected daily rainfall data from 11,726 stations, totalizing approximately 130 million daily values, organized in ten Hierarchical Data Format (HDF) file, designed to organize large amounts of data and to make file reading faster. Then, a three step quality control procedure was applied to the data set to determine a quality of index (Q) by station by year: (i) Basic Quality Control, an (ii) Absolute Quality Control and a (iii) Relative Quality Control. After discarding poorquality station, the rainfall gridded data will be built with two interpolation methods: (1) inverse distance weighting (IDW) and (2) angular distance weighting (ADW).
