RESUMO: Water stress triggers various cellular responses in plants, altering the normality of metabolic flow. Pyruvate is an important metabolic component of the glycolysis pathway, triggering genes that activate stomatal movements, possibly influencing on drought tolerance. Here, we evaluate the effects of exogenous application of pyruvate on peanut plants submitted to water stress. Two drought-tolerant and sensitive cultivars were used in the study, BR 1 and IAC Caiapó, respectively. Plants were submitted to water suspension and leaf-treated with pyruvate at 100 µM and 50 mM. The evaluations were based on growth and gas exchange (IRGA), photosynthesis (model LCpro-SD) and fluorescence (Opti-Sciences, model OS5p) analyses. In addition, biochemical assays were performed in order to estimate the antioxidant activity of SOD, CAT ad APX enzymes, and free proline content. The water deficit affected the physiological functions of the two cultivars, however exogenous pyruvate at 50 nM in sensitive IAC Caiapó contributed to mitigate widely the effect of water stress on plants. Although this is a prospective study, this information contributes to deepen the understanding of pyruvate in response to water stress and its contribution in selection procedures focusing in tolerance to drought.
