RESUMO: This work presents a digital control for fixed frequency step-down switched-inductor
DC-DC converter in the context of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC) for
portable battery-powered applications. Restrictions in the current consumption and total
die area of this type of application make the design of the Analog to Digital Converter
(ADC) and the Digital to Pulse Width Modulation (DPWM) difficult. Therefore, this
work suggests a window ADC and a variable gain DPWM with a combined typical current
consumption of 60 μA. The ADC requires a 48 MHz clock in order to operate at 2 MSPS
with 20 levels. The DPWM operates at 2 MHz with a typical line regulation of 10 mV/V
and step size of 16mV. Both ADC and DPWM were designed in CMOS 180 nm (schematic
level only) and co-simulated with the verilog model of a digital Proportional Integral
Derivative (PID). It is assumed that the DC-DC can be supplied either with a Lithium-Ion
battery (2.7 V to 4.2 V) or, during charge, with a USB port (4.7 V to 5.5 V), the load
current can vary from 0 to 200 mA, the switching frequency is 2MHz, and the output
voltage corresponds to the operating range of the native transistor available in the CMOS
180 nm technology (1.62 V to 1.98 V).
