POSTGRADUATE PROGRAM IN DEVELOPMENT AND TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION IN MEDICINES (PPgDITM)

FEDERAL UNIVERSITY OF PARAÍBA

Presentation

The Postgraduate Program in Development and Technological Innovation in Medicines (PPgDITM) is a Doctorate in Association (Concept 4), which aims to train human resources capable of acting in the research, development, and technological innovation of medicines. The PPgDITM proposal was based on the lack of doctoral courses in the area and of doctors with a profile to work in the industry, considering the growing installation of pharmaceutical chemicals, especially in the Northeast region of Brazil. Besides, there was a need to meet the demand generated by the opening of new undergraduate and master's courses in the area of Pharmacy in the North and Northeast regions, as the graduates of these courses did not have many options to continue their training in the region.

PPgDITM consists of a broad association of 4 IFES from the Northeast region: 1.Federal University of Ceará – UFC, 2.Universidade Federal da Paraíba – UFPB, 3.Federal Rural University of Pernambuco – UFRPE, 4.Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte – UFRN. It was designed to cover all stages of the pharmaceutical production chain, involving aspects related to the development of drugs and medicines, the processes related to obtaining them, to use in the population, in the context of post-marketing surveillance and its interfaces, thus meeting the proposal to train qualified human resources, at the doctoral level.

To allow a broad training with a focus on the development of innovative medicines, the course is divided into thematic areas, called training stages. Each stage is made up of compulsory subjects (minimum of 18 credits) and electives (minimum of 18 credits), being planned in such a way that students take compulsory subjects in each of the training stages and then complement the credits with elective subjects according to the specificity of their thesis theme. Five training stages were structured, namely: Chemistry/Biochemistry, Non-clinical, Pharmaceutical, Clinic and Registration and Post-marketing, including Technological Innovation and Intellectual Property.

After the end of the course, the doctorate graduates of PPgDITM should have solid knowledge in the field of pharmacy, mastering the production chain for the development of new drugs and innovative research, and technology transfer in any of the stages of the chain: from synthesis

and prospecting for new bioactive molecules to the clinical research of new drugs, including determining the effectiveness and safety of these molecules and their formulation in pharmaceutical specialties.
