Colóquio: Metamaterial realization of Milne universe (Prof. Fernando Moraes - UFPB)

Initial conditions are always a trouble in cosmology but can be circumvented by cyclic universe models: an endless repetition of big crunches followed by big bangs (this is in fact an old idea that can be traced back to ancient mythologies). Even without referring to initial conditions, some issues remain in these    models, notably the passage through the singularity, the transition from big crunch to big bang. Recently, a safe transition has  been proposed by Steinhardt {\it et al}, where the singularity is nothing more than the temporary colapse of a fifth dimension. The three space dimensions remain large and time keeps flowing smoothly. A toy model for the geometry of this transition is the compactified 2D Milne universe which is essentially a double cone in 3D Minkowski spacetime. In this talk I will show how the big crunch/big bang transition may be realized in the laboratory using hyperbolic metamaterials.
