RESUMO: ABSTRACT Psychosocial factors and physical activity in adolescents: the moderate nutritional status of this association? Author: Tayse Guedes Cabral Advisor: Jose Cazuza de Farias Junior Social support and self-efficacy are associated with the practice of physical activity in adolescents. However, it has been recommended to analyze to what extent these associations vary according to the characteristics of adolescents. This study aimed to analyze whether the association between psychosocial factors (social support and self efficacy) and the practice of physical activity of different intensities is moderated by the nutritional status of adolescents. This is a cross-sectional study that used part of the baseline data (2014) of the LONCAAFS Study (Longitudinal Study on Sedentary Behavior, Physical Activity, Food and Adolescent Health). The sample consisted of 650 adolescents aged 10 to 14 (52,9% female) from public schools in the city of Joao Pessoa (PB), who used an accelerometer. Social support and self-efficacy were measured by scales composed of 15 items (five items for each source of support: father, mother and friends, on a Likert scale) and four items that considered how adolescents perceived themselves to be able to practice physical activity under the presence of barriers, and scores ranging from 5 to 20 points and 4 to 8 points respectively were produced. The physical activity of different intensities was measured by Actigraph GT3X+ accelerometers. The nutritional status was evaluated by body mass index and categorized in no overweight (underweight / normal weight) and overweight (overweight / obese). The one way ANOVA test was used to compare the time of practice of physical activity in the different intensities, the social support and self-efficacy scores among adolescents with and without excess body weight. The crude and adjusted linear regression was used to evaluate whether the association between social support, self efficacy and physical activity practice of different intensities is moderated by the nutritional status of adolescents. The level of significance was set at p ≤ 0,05. Adolescents with excess body weight had a lower time of moderate to vigorous physical activity, but similar levels of social support (father p = 0,040; mother p = 0,511, friends p = 0,822), and self-efficacy (p = 0.071) compared to their non-overweight peers. The social support provided by friends was positively and significantly associated with the practice of moderate intensity physical activity (β = 2,67, IC95%: 0,28; 5,07). The association between psychosocial factors and physical activity practice was not moderated by the nutritional status of adolescents. It was concluded that the social support provided by friends was associated with higher levels of moderate intensity physical activity. And the nutritional status did not moderate the association between psychosocial factors and the practice of physical activity of different intensities.
