This dissertation addresses, from a historical investigation, the rescue of the memory of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of Rosary of Black Men in the conformation of urban space and architectural production in the city of Parahyba, today João Pessoa. The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary of Black Men figured in the primitive urban nucleus of the city, until the second decade of the twentieth century, as one of its main examples of colonial religious architecture. The monument built by the Brotherhood of the same name became a victim of the so-called "progress" that prevailed in the period of the First Republic, characterized by the modernization of brazilian cities, whose landscape aspect of still colonial bias would be supplanted by the demolition of buildings, as well as by new proposals for the appropriation of public spaces. The demolition of the Rosary of Blacks Church and the considerable scarcity of documentary records about its architectural aspect contributed, in a way, to the forgetting of the presence of the Rosary Brotherhood in the city, and the consequent historical erasure of its main material legacy, its immaterial expressions as forms of appropriation of urban space and, therefore, the urban development of the city of Parahyba with emphasis on the black population. The present work seeks, through a historical, documental perspective, to systematize the contributions and effects imprinted on the landscape from the permanence of this group, considering the actions of the Church in relation to the dynamics of land ownership, the problems surrounding the black population in the colonial scenario, as well as the set of relationships developed between specific agents and their implications for the conformation of urban space. It is also intended to reassemble, from data collected from cartographic, iconographic and journalistic collection of the time, as well as from other churches of the Brotherhood of the Rosary, the architectural production developed by the Brotherhood of Blacks in the city of Parahyba.

The present work unfolds in the field of the cultural heritage of Pernambuco with the expectation of providing contributions regarding the integration of popular expressions into preestablished, often hierarchical settings. The São Pedro courtyard has been chosen as the empirical object of this study, seeking to place this research in the debate about the continuities and transformations that at times decharacterize and devalue a heritage asset, but at other times redefine the meaning and values that ensure the asset remains representative for society. Based on these observations and reflections, the general objective of the investigation has been reached, which is: starting from and referencing the values listed in the processes that decreed the Concathedral Church of São Pedro dos Clérigos and its courtyard as national heritage, to verify what still ensures, today, its condition as a culturally significant heritage for the city of Recife. Therefore, an attempt is made to understand how the São Pedro courtyard, amid continuities and transformations, has survived and evolved over this time of protection, without losing its character as a heritage of Recife. Through a historical, descriptive, and analyticalinterpretative approach, the aim is to revisit the values and meanings attributed to the São Pedro courtyard in its protection, as well as to observe the changes and continuities in its dynamics of use and its morphology and image. This investigation is methodologically developed on three inseparable dimensions: historical, spatial, and symbolic, with the purpose of understanding how and why the courtyard remains a focal point for cultural manifestations in Recife, which, although mutable over time, have supported the preservation of this urban space. The discussions presented bring two main contributions: the first allows us to understand the mentioned courtyard from different analytical perspectives, thus highlighting that the conservation of this place lies in the relationship between built and intangible heritage; secondly, the construction of a narrative produced by many hands is observed, in their respective times, as they come together in the same space, embodying the plurality of meanings of what is categorized as part of the cultural identity of the city of Recife, as told by its history and architecture.

This study compiles historical contributions on practices linked to the actions of the State, technicians and popular organizations in one historiographic construction - of several possible ones - of the Paulo Freire Complex. The objective of the research is to develop an historical version that complements the predominant panorama identified in the productions that address this collective autoconstruction and self-managed social housing. To this end, a methodological path was structured that is based on the understanding of Michel Foucault's genealogical historiographical approach, as well as that of assembly by Paola Berenstein Jacques. The work is divided into two parts. Part I describes the predominant historical perspective, recorded in documents and productions that narrate the events that culminated in the Paulo Freire Complex. Part II presents a more elastic perspective, built based on two trajectories that emerge from the production of the set: the trajectory of formation and that of construction technique. To this end, we use contributions elaborated on Latin American experiences that occurred after the Second World War and are related to the aspects mapped in part I. The route, assembled from these entries, led to clues that connect the object of research to past events that were little related or even named in previous versions of this historiography

Cycle mobility provides several social, economic and environmental benefits for society and the environment. Therefore, the assessment of road performance, with an emphasis on safety and comfort, is a crucial element for bicycle transportation planning. Furthermore, it is essential to consider users perception and the different types of spatial configurations. The aim of this thesis is to develop a methodological proposal for evaluating the bicycle level of service applicable to intersections, cycle structures and road segments, considering cycle suitability indicators and the perception of cyclists and experts in cycle mobility. The methodological procedures were divided into: (I) synthesis of indicators, through a systematic literature review; (II) perception of cyclists and experts, through online questionnaires and interviews to define the importance of indicators, using the Successive Interval Method and video simulations; (III) case study in João Pessoa-PB, through data collection, modeling and application of the model index, in addition to correlation analysis. The main results of stage (I) presented a synthesis of 30 bicycle assessment models, with more than 40 types of indicators for analyzing their effects and applicability. In stage (II), the result was a classification of key indicators, including the Presence of a cycle structure, Volume and Speed of motorized vehicles. In stage (III), the QualiCiclos - Bicycle Suitability Index - was presented, which has 4 categories (infrastructure, signage, traffic and environment), 16 types of indicators listed for 3 sub-index according to the analysis units (intersections, cycle structures and shared segments). The application of QualiCiclos was carried out based on road representative configurations of the cycling network and around a a trip generator (UFPB) and its connection routes between neighborhoods. The results presented an analysis across various scoring levels, from the spatial unit to the set of evaluated spaces, revealing, mainly, insufficient or sufficient (at the limit) levels of bicycle suitability. Finally, a strong correlation was observed between the index metrics and users' perception. In this context, we seek to contribute by advancing conceptually and methodologically about the subject, providing a robust instrument to aid cycling diagnosis and planning. In addition, the study addresses several pertinent issues about the conjecture of bicycle suitability factors for the Brazilian context and the conditions of intersections, cycle structures and road segments. This work aims to promote the use of bicycles and their benefits for a more sustainable urban mobility

The object of study presented here are the central urban voids
located on Tambiá neighborhood in the city of João Pessoa-PB.
The dissertation seeks to identify and characterize the urban
voids in the spatial area, as well as to reflect on the role they can
play in combating the urban housing deficit, based on a
reflection on their urban habitability conditions. Therefore, it was
necessary to verify the presence and organize an inventory of
the urban voids present in the study area, identify the main
attributes of the specimens found and, based on the observed
data, evaluate the condition of urban habitability of this amount.
Although they extend throughout the city, urban voids are
commonly seen in downtown city centers, mainly motivated by
the development of new centralities, however the city is not
equally accessible to all its inhabitants. Conceived in these
terms, the problem of this research starts from a questioning,
referring to simultaneous, albeit adverse, urban situations: why
are there central urban voids in cities with a housing deficit?
Focusing on the object, the aim is to answer the question
proposed through the application of the Urban Habitability Index,
which assesses accessibility to urban infrastructure and urban
facilities, into the urban voids of Tambiá neighborhood. Thereby,
this research seeks to the production of a set of information and
procedures that can help both in understanding the current
condition of urban voids, within the spatial area studied, and in
discussions that can foster public policy instruments, with regard
to the urban housing and the rehabilitation of urban voids.

Through a phenomenological approach, intermediated by the
body and the human senses, this work is an analytical study of
the experience in the architecture of the Cais do Sertão Museum.
The Museum, marked by representativeness and reference to
northeastern culture, was designed in 2009 by the Brasil
Arquitetura Office that, according to Max Risselada (2005, p.10)
represents a specific architectural culture". Furthermore, the
founding architects, Marcelo Ferraz and Francisco Fanucci,
manifest projective postures aimed at a constructive sensitivity
directed to the phenomenology of architecture, with an openness
to the senses and the appreciation of the perceptive experience.
Starting from the question: How can the architectural culture of
Brasil Arquitetura affects the sensory experience of users? Having
as a general objective: to understand the relationship between
the architectural experiences in the Cais do Sertão Museum and
the production of Brasil Arquitetura. Therefore, the
methodological procedures were organized into 4 stages of
research: 1) bibliographic review; 2) documentary research; 3)
field research and 4) phenomenological description. which
sought to describe the phenomenon that is revealed in
experience, pointing to a perceptual experience, linked to
memory, consciousness, the body and architectural culture.
Three visits to the Cais do Sertão Museum were made,
developing an experience report for each visit, analyzed from the
lines: 1) childhood memory; 2) senses and movement and 3)
architectural culture. Sensory experiences in architecture are
evidenced, and it is sought to emphasize the role of the body,
senses and memory in this experience. This work highlights that
experiencing a place / space is always a new and individual
experience, and we can only understand it through our bodies.

This work aims to investigate the dissemination of modern architecture in the cities of Crato, Juazeiro do Norte and Barbalha, in the Cariri Region, in the Southern part of the state of Ceará, based on the production of institutional public buildings by the State, built between the 1960s and 1980s. The choice of the Crajubar urban complex as a spatial area is justified by the need for a more comprehensive view of the production of modern architecture in the northeast region of Brazil, especially in the small towns, a topic little explored in the historiography of Brazilian architecture. To this end, it initially focused on the bibliographical review, together with the collection and recording of data found in libraries and collections, which made it possible to study the modernization processes of the three cities, including the identification of a set of works built in previous decades. Among the data collected, it was noticed that the majority of large-scale works were built between the 1960s and 1980s on the initiative of the State, which led to defining institutional buildings/public equipment constructed during this period as research objects. This decision aligns with a perspective in the discourse of the historiography of modern Brazilianarchitecture that the State positions itself as the main structuring agent of modernization in the first decades of the 20th century, and modern architecture as an instrument for the construction of national identity and modernity. 21 buildings were mapped and presented, including administrative headquarters, bank branches, stadiums, bus stations, hotels, activity centers, museums and public markets; correlating the insertion of this equipment into the urban fabric of cities, together with the identification of some professionals, such as architects and engineers, responsible for these works. The research results indicate that the economic situation of the country and the development plans undertaken by the federal and state government, with the Cariri Cearense Region as an area of strategic planning, enabled Crajubar to be inserted within the developmental perspective with the construction of a set of modern buildings that marked the process of transformation of the urban landscape of these cities.

The research aims to study a public open space located in the
city of João Pessoa - PB, the Praça da Paz, since it provides a
set of characteristics, allowing it to be observed and analyzed in
terms of urban vitality. The theoretical-methodological approach
is based on the conception of the world as a network made up
of human actors, understood as Social Dispositions, and nonhuman actors, the Spatial Technical Devices of the Urban
(DTSU). We start by observing a series of signs of urban vitality
and questioning the dynamics that sustain it over time; we also
question the collectives present in the square, which are capable of having repercussions on their surroundings. We used direct and photographic observation techniques (Observation Protocol), cartographic systematization (QGis and Photoshop), as
well as the Urban Safari for the spatial characterization of the
square and its surroundings. They allowed us to understand the
collective of urban objects, how they act and relate to each
other, or even by what processes they are the target of manifestations of social appropriation over time. By translating the socio-technical network of Praça da Paz, conflicts, regulations,
problems and contradictions were mapped and narrated. The
perception of the mobilization of collectives, as well as the
choice on the part of its daily users - albeit with reservations and
regulations - to maintain their leisure and commercial activities,
their physical exercise and socialization rituals in the public
space appears quite strongly. Finally, we conclude that the socio-technical network of Praça da Paz comprises a set of controversial socio-spatial dynamics, but which are the result of the
engagement of specific publics and are therefore perennial;
something intrinsic to urban vitality.

This paper reflects on the theory and practice of teaching architecture and
urbanism in undergraduate courses, permeated by
experimental and critical field. Based on the assumptions and social
responsibilities of architects and architecture teachers, it raises questions about
how to make teaching/learning relevant to the contemporary problems of our
field. And, effectively, what would be the place of the classroom in the process of
shaping the body of knowledge of architects and urban planners? As in an
archaeological study, some aspects of the classroom are revealed in layers,
some of them are buried, but possible to be exposed, helping us to understand
the founding cultural conformations, being instituted or imposed, as well as
finding cracks, generating deconstructions and new compositions.Seeking to
carry out a prospection, taking the 'classroom' as a tr

place in the foundation processes of architecture and the knowledge
processes. The research was triggered by the reflection on the meaning of the
experiences carried out during the teaching of the Plastic Workshop discipline,
inhabiting 'Room 562', between 2011 and 2019, at the Faculty of Architecture
and Urbanism of the Federal University of Piauí. By using the documentation

The thesis discusses the place of the body in the education of architects and urban planners. Considers that the
condition for learning is inseparable from the bodily experience lived by those who learn, as well as the
possibilities of self-transformation promoted by these experiences.
It uses as a theoretical foundation: the ideas of Baruch de Espinosa, about affections and knowledge as the
greatest of affections; Michel Foucault's ideas about the body as a locus of learning.
From a pedagogical point of view, these forces are articulated through Paulo Freire's thinking on loving and
intensive education and learning, updated by bell hooks' feminist approach.
From these provocations, learning is approached as a process in which the subject constitutes himself insofar as
he finds, and also constitutes, the other and the world. Thus, architecture is assumed as a construct, of incorporeal
objects, equally capable of affecting and being affected.
At this point, the research is based on a series of pedagogical experiments that have corporeality as a constituent
device and point out learning possibilities through meetings, where teachers act as mediators in the development
of embodied architects. A questioning guided by the perspective that teachers too constitute bodies in flux,
blurred, desiring and, therefore, learners

This thesis is the result of a qualitative investigation of a
single and exploratory case study that has as its object
urbanity through the socio-spatial integration of the edge
spaces of peripheral university campuses. The denomination
of edge spaces refers to the open spaces located between the
limits of the urban plot and the building, often resulting from
obligations imposed by urban regulations. There is an
understanding that these spaces could contribute to urbanity,
by acting as mediators and amplifiers of public interaction
spaces in cities that emerge in university surroundings, from
the settlement of campuses. An ethnographic sensitivity is
especially useful for the development of field research, in
which attention was paid to situations of permanence and
movements of humans in the open and edge spaces of the
case study, the Campus of Santiago of the University of
Aveiro (Aveiro, Portugal), as well as its immediate
surroundings. These field activities served for us to explore
the possibilities of establishing design principles for the edge
spaces of university campuses. In parallel, it discusses the
very notion of urbanity as a category of study and the validity
of its association with the built environment of edge spaces.
With the aid of the paradigm of the Actor-Network Theory, it
is considered that the Urbanidades are multiple experiences
of and in the urban space, which tend to socio-spatial
integration. Due to its relational and plural character, the
pair urbanities-disurbanities is inseparable and represents a
latency in each human and non-human actor. Finally,
urbanity is dynamic and imponderable, therefore, the effort
to identify the social actors and their collectives, the interests
that drive them to action, as well as the eventual
controversies they deal with may be helpful for an empirical
approach of the various Urbanidades-desurbanidades
present in the university surroundings. Despite being
digressive, the approximation of urbanities-disurbanities
functions as a calibration of field perceptions, in which a
series of actors and mediations are made invisible. Finally,
despite digressive, the approach of the Urbanidadesdesurbanidades functions as a calibration to the field
perceptions, in which a series of actors and mediations are
invisible. Finally, although restricted to a single case study,
the theoretical and methodological considerations presented
here can be used for developping researches and analysis in
existing cases in different contexts, including in Brazil.

It is noticed that the urbanization processes of the last 70
years have established a distance in the cities, regarding
the relationship with the natural elements that make up their surroundings, as is the case, for example, of urban
rivers, which have been largely deteriorated and forgotten.
In the current context, the banks of rivers are constant
targets of urban interference, being subject to the most
diverse impacts, which affect both the natural environment
and the built environment itself. This situation is getting
worse every day, thus demonstrating the verified lack of
urban planning, since it does not embrace the rivers, in a
way that it can contribute to their ecological, urban, social
and political demands. Based on the above, the present
dissertation carried out a diagnosis of the urban landscape
on the banks of the Espinharas river, object of study of the
research located in the city of Patos-PB, in its
environmental and urban aspects. In order to carry out the
analysis and obtain a prognosis of the study area, a river
bank analysis methodology was used, already validated by
other researchers, as it fits the problem of the
aforementioned dissertation, as well as its specific
objectives. Thus, after carrying out this analysis of the
banks and acquiring the results of the current scenario of
the river under study, with regard to its urban and fluvial
aspects, its levels of degradation were presented,
understanding the real problem faced by the river. In this
way, a table with scenarios of possible interventions for
riverbanks was elaborated, aiming at the conception of
scenarios that establish urban and environmental
connections, based on a tripod formed by the integration of
the river with the city, recovery of its waters and
awareness on the part of of the population about the
importance of the river for the local quality of life. Finally,
the dissertation discusses and presents the existing
problems between the Espinharas River and the city of Patos and its possible restoration potentials, that is, the
research opens the way for new discussions and debates
about the river-city relationship.

The therapeutic environment focused on the rehabilitation of people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is fundamental for the development of these individuals' psychomotor skills. In view of this and with emphasis on the physical characteristics of the built environment, it is possible to state that its configurations can influence the behaviors and sensoriality of users, especially when it comes to the person with autism, for this reason, strategies focusing on the needs of these users are essential. indispensable. Thinking about it, this research sought to answer the following question: how can sensory architecture in rehabilitation environments favor the improvement of the quality of these spaces, based on the sensory-spatial perceptions of people with ASD and others involved in this context? And the objective is to analyze the person- environment relationship in rehabilitation spaces for people with ASD, based on the principles of Universal Design and Sensory Architecture, in order to support architectural design recommendations for Autistic Care Centers and/or or similar. For this, a Case Study was carried out at the Autistic Care Center (CAA), in João Pessoa-PB. And for the fulfillment of the proposed objective, the methodological procedures were divided into 03 Steps: Environment, User and Design Recommendations. In short, the results showed guidelines regarding the demands found in the CAA, such as guidelines that corroborate the design of
rehabilitation environments focused on the person with ASD.

This thesis aims to reveal some of the theoretical foundations of space in Modern Architecture, based on the examination of the spatial theories developed in the field of architecture since the mid-nineteenth century, in the context of aesthetic discussions carried out by German theorists, in particular, those who shared what known as the Theory of Pure Visibility. It is intended, from the identification of precepts contained in the first spatial theories of architecture, elaborated by the sculptor Adolf Hildebrand (1847-1921) and by the art historian August Schmarsow (1853-1936), to compare them with the seminal essays on space of Modern Architecture, published in the first decades of the 20th century, by the Hungarian artist László Moholy-Nagy (1895-1946) and the Austrian architect Rudolph Michael Schindler (1887-1953). These essays, in turn, were chosen not only because they constitute important theoretical insertions on the subject, but also because of their authors' proximity to the German artistic context. The confrontation between the spatial precepts of the German theories and such essays, seeks to observe whether it is possible to identify traces or links of the unprecedented theories of the 19th century, in the spatial ideas of the new architecture, that is, in the theoretical bases of the profound spatial transformation promoted by Modern Architecture.

Taxonomy for digital fabrication: opportunities for architectural materialization
-

-
Show Summary
-
Digital manufacturing has increased in popularity in industry and architecture, emerging from the development of computational processes
in CAD software and CAM production. Initially associated with the production of buildings with complex shapes, architecture firms have
adopted this approach in search of sustainability, cost reduction, and optimization of construction time. In the Brazilian context, most
digital fabrication laboratories are concentrated in the academic environment, where universities, research groups, and laboratories explore
this technology to design and manufacture architectural models. However, the development of these technologies faces challenges,
including the need to create a culture of innovation, promote the transition from individual to collaborative thinking, and optimize
economic and administrative factors, such as reducing bureaucracy and equipment costs. The following question arises in this scenario:
How to guide designers in architectural materialization through digital fabrication? The hypothesis is that digital fabrication, when chosen
to materialize an object, follows criteria in which it is possible to identify and structure a taxonomy for the fabrication and production of
architectural elements. The object of study is the relationship between architectural materialization and digital fabrication, focused on
digital fabrication techniques, developed machinery, and published articles that discuss the subject so far. The research aims to develop a
tool capable of assisting in the design process for architectural materialization with digital fabrication. This work follows the "constructive
research" approach, which was constituted in three phases: understanding, proposition, and validation. The comprehension phase includes
the theoretical framework and systematic literature reviews. The proposition involves the synthesis of taxonomies applicable to
architecture and developing the taxonomy for architectural materialization through digital fabrication. Furthermore, the validation phase
comprises internal and external validation steps with activities intended to ensure the results' efficiency. Thus, the tool was submitted to
qualitative content analysis, its experimentation, and applications in the catalog of projects that address digital fabrication. The research
was developed at the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB) and MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) and had as its main result
the development of the "Taxonomy for Digital Fabrication applied to architecture" (TDFab+Arch). This tool assists designers in
architectural materialization through digital fabrication and is available online. It can also be used in the design process and to classify
completed projects. TDFab+Arch is flexible and allows the incorporation of new criteria and applications in academia or professional
activities. This tool is a significant contribution to the field, and the research is relevant due to the increasing expansion of digital
manufacturing

The trains played a structuring role in many Brazilian cities, representing technological innovation with their emergence and rise from the 19th century onwards. The city of Campina Grande-PB, due to its strategic geographic location and high potential for the trade of cotton, cattle, and cereals, was granted its first railway station, the Great Western Brazil Railway, in 1907, known as the "Estação Velha" (Old Station). This had a significant impact on its territorial extension and greater prominence in the economic sector. To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the arrival of the train in the city and meet the demands of the railway sector, Campina Grande initiated the construction of its second railway station, the "Estação Nova" (New Station), in 1957, as part of the Rede Ferroviária do Nordeste. It featured buildings, support warehouses, and a larger maneuvering area. After the heyday of the railway, there was a combination of negative processes and contexts that influenced a gradual decline leading to the discontinuation of passenger transportation between the 1940s and 1990s. Following the national scenario, Campina Grande discontinued passenger transport in the 1980s. The Estação Velha was listed as a heritage site by IPHAEP and is now used as the Cotton Museum, with its physical structure preserved. On the other hand, the Estação Nova was not valued as a heritage site; it was forgotten by the government and heritage organizations, becoming a victim of material and symbolic abandonment. As a result, its railway yard and buildings fell into a state of ruins and deterioration, currently serving as a backdrop for social pathologies. Its windows were also stolen, buildings were stripped of their roofs, and residual waste accumulated. The main objective of this study was to conduct a case study on the spaces of the Estação Nova in Campina Grande, aiming to analyze the causes and consequences of abandonment in relation to historical, political, heritage, infrastructure, and social aspects that transformed its built environment, morphology, and use of spaces. The cartographic method was used, along with documentary analysis and literature review, for its development. As a result, a dynamic portrait was created of the transformation process of the railway yard through historical and heritage analysis, built environment examination, and spatial syntax. The case study traced the chronology of events and the main reasons that led to the discontinuation and fostered the current state of abandonment and degradation.

The production process of segregated cities is a reflection of the accelerated urbanization process occurred in Brazil in the second half of the 20th century, which contributed to the production of sprawling and socially and territorially segregated cities. In this context, the public transportation has the role of integrating different areas of the city and promoting the population's access to urban opportunities, however, it often reinforces segregation even more. Currently, more than 84% of Brazil's population, and 99% of João Pessoa's inhabitants, live in urban areas and the number of cars traveling in the cities has also grown sharply. As a result, the low-income population is often deprived of accessingthe urban opportunities available. Given this scenario, this work analyzes whether public transportation in João Pessoa contributes to the socio-spatial segregation caused by the urban evolution of the city, based on the application of the accumulated opportunity index. The spatialization of data was carried out by the aiding of a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tool, by connecting the results to socioeconomic data and urban opportunities in the study area. Thiswork analyzes the ease of accessing jobs, public education and health services through the usage of public transportation by bus and private car, making simulations for travel times within 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes and 60 minutes. In João Pessoa, the main urban opportunities are located in the central area of the city, however, it appears that there is a large concentration of the population in the southeast region, especially the low-income population, which is concentrated in the expanded areas of the city. The results obtained in this study suggest that: a) the low-income population residing on the borders of the city accesses fewer opportunities compared to the population located in areas close to the Center and with higher income; b) the usage of private car provides shorter travel times compared to public transportationfor accessing opportunities; c) the areas with higher rates of motorization in the city, which have higher per capita incomes, coincide with neighborhoods where it is possible to access more opportunities in less time.
Therefore, the population with higher purchasing power benefits by living in the best locations in terms of accessibility, in addition to being more likely to use the car.

Housing has always been the basic variable for structuring the territory and the explicit manifestation of
its socio-spatial hierarchy. Brazilian cities expanded under a dual institutional perspective: formal
versus informal. Public housing developments have been made out to be, and present themselves as,
official instruments that crisscross two cities without representing either perspective fully. Where
they have been built explains this duality. Starting early in the 20th century, the decision on the location
of these developments relied on different rationalist narratives supported by urban zoning, in order to
establish a legitimate and supposedly equitable worldview. Looking through historical lenses, this
research analyzes the role of formal city devices - housing policy and urban legislation - in the
production and consolidation of spaces for the low-income population in Brazil and its relationship with
the processes of socio-spatial segregation that currently structure these metropolises. The Metropolitan
Region of Recife, one of the oldest in the country (2023 marks its half a century existence), was used as
this studys spatial boundary. The use of the theoretical concept of segregation revealed its procedural
character leading the work to a diachronic approach. The long period studied starts in 1919, with the
first disciplinary devices for the location of popular housing in Recife, and ends in 2019, when the
Minha Casa Minha Vida Program has been extinct. Despite the different sociopolitical contexts in that
century, the investigation shows that urban zoning and the choice of location for social housing
developments have fed a placement pattern that continually, distances lower income housing from the
metropolitan center. One of the findings is that the segregating institutional practices were born with the
housing issue itself and precede, by decades, the emergence of a real estate market. The research thus
presents a counterpoint to the most frequent approaches that assume the centrality of the theme in the
land prices, highlighting a more perverse and older aspect in public decisions - the desire for separation
from poverty by the urban elites. The segregation produced and reproduced by the researched
institutional devices normalizes the spatialization of individuals according to social classes. These
devices ensure that certain territories are (formally) inaccessible to the lower-income population, at the
same time, they legitimize areas of lower value as suitable to the low-income population.

This thesis analyzes theoretically and historically the presence of the theatrical dimension that emerges from the architectural work of Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992), especially in its mature phase, understood between 1976, when he wrote the article Planejamento ambiental: desenho no impasse and goes back to designing for the city of São Paulo, and 1992, the year of his death, through various sources, among them the process records of architectural and urban projects, executed or not, which present emblematic and instigating similarities to the creative processes, as well as to the perceptive and communicative aspects of the space in the Theater.
Interlocution with theater groups with which the architect worked over at least three decades, and its clear insertion as a constitutive and critical agent of the particular historical contexts in which this production is inserted, were engendered by an original thought, in which the plot between the languages of Architecture and Theater is placed at the service of a program at the same time aesthetic and political and from which Lina Bo Bardis design epistemology is detached, in a broad sense.
In addition to the continuous references made by the architect to concepts of the theatrical universe or even directly to playwrights, it is in the graphic-visual records of the projects that we can observe and decipher, motabilem, that pointed plot and from which a latent and fabled memory of the artifacts, solutions, landscapes and experiences of popular inspiration intervene as a guiding narrative: a dramaturgy that takes place incorporated into the very materiality of its artistic language, architecture, through the competence that this art has, like in the theater, to fictionalize.
The dialogical reinvention of forms, materials and techniques of popular expression, emulating the meanings of this space-time experience through the path of theatricality, is shown as a critical and operative design trick that is, at the same time of resistance and 'revenge' through which prefigurations of another possible Modernity are programmed, in a period inflamed by memories and the urgency of action, under the historical climate of uncertainties, but also of hopes, felt with the political reopening and the establishment of the New Republic in Brazil.
